Lessons on Excel

The Goals:

  1. To learn about the stock market, and mutual fund investing.
  2. To document your future career earnings.
  3. To locate an apartment where you want to live.
  4. To calculate a car loan for your dream car.
  5. To use excel and plan out your paycheck, budget, and investments.
  6. To observer the power of planning, saving, and investing

 The Requirements:

  1. Compete in the Stocks Quest Challenges by making stock trades.
  2. Document your car loan rate and cost.
  3. Document your apartment rent cost.
  4. Complete a paycheck for your career.
  5. Complete a budget plan with charts.
  6. Complete an investment plan with charts.
  7. Place all this information on your Spreadsheet web page.

 Day #1, Overview & StocksQuest

1.       Understand the goals of the unit.

2.       Join the stock market challenge

a)      Register at http://StocksQuest.com

b)      Log-in and JOIN A CONTEST

c)        See board for contest and password

d)      Find your classroom contest of $10,000

3.       Learn how to buy and sell stock.

4.       Learn about http://finance.yahoo.com

5.       Learn how to read stock information.

6.       Pick one or two stock to buy.
 

Day #2, Buy a CAR

1.       Download the EXCEL Workbook: MyMoneyStart.xls

2.       Overview the spreadsheet and study.

3.       Continue to trade stocks & shop for a car.

4.       Use http://Autos.Yahoo.com locate the cost of the car you will buy when you are in your career.

5.       Use the Function PMT and calculate your car loan payment information.

6.       Document loan information on the Excel worksheet titled "Support Info."

7.       Provide Loan Amount, #months, Interest Rate.


Day #3, Rent an Apartment

1.       Continue to trade stocks, and plan.

2.       Select a city where you want to live.

3.       Use http://RealEstate.Yahoo.com to locate the price of your apartment rent.

4.       Document your apartment rate on the excel spreadsheet.

5.        Document your apartment details on your web page. Add this info to your spreadsheet web page.
 

Day #4, Build a Paycheck Worksheet

1.       Continue to trade stocks, and plan.

2.       Use Excel spreadsheet template provided.

3.       Build your paycheck worksheet and calculate your taxes, gross pay and net pay.

4.        Create a chart of the paycheck tax area.

5.       Add formulas to make the spreadsheet work.

6.       Save this spreadsheet into your web portfolio folder.

 

Day #5, Build a Budget Worksheet

1.       Continue building the budget

2.        Complete the formulas and data required.

3.       Add charts where requested.

4.       Begin building the investment page.

5.       Continue to trade stocks
 

Day #7, Build an Investment Worksheet

1.       Build the investment worksheet.

2.       Add formulas for FV, future value for your investments, if you need help, read this...

3.        BECOME A MILLIONAIRE on paper!

4.       Lean about savings and investing in mutual funds.

5.       Learn about Bonds and mutual funds.

 

Day #8, Conclude Spreadsheets / Investing

1.       Finish the spreadsheet web page.

2.       Hyperlink the excel doc on your web page.

3.       Complete spreadsheet web page.
