Transiting the C & D Canal
The
C&D Canal, Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, connects these two bays at the northern
end. This canal is used by commercial shipping traveling between Wilmington on
the Delaware River and Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay. Auto carriers, barges,
and container ships are common sights on this canal. Boaters need to be on the
lookout for these ships which travel at 10 knots to 17 knots in speed.
The canal is wide enough for a small yacht to pass these commercial ships but
you need to stay alert and keep out of their way. Commercial ships have the
right of way in these situations.
